Consider:

     ·  AirBNB – world’s largest accommodation provider…does not own rooms

     ·  Uber – world’s largest taxi company…does not own cars

     ·  Alibaba…world’s largest retailer measured by gross merchandise volume… does not own any warehouses

However, with the low barriers to creating software-based platforms, there is a question of sustainability for the “any-to-any” model. They must continue to differentiate for positional advantage given the “copy cat” companies replicating the platform (Source: HBR).
