· 1980’s: economics of industry attractiveness and value chains
· 1990’s: core competencies
· 2000’s: rapid market and technological change, growing external risk, and big data
· 2010’s: Shorter planning cycles and decentralized strategic decision making
· In 1980’s, evolved from CEO’s domain into a corporate function.
In addition to this, several roles and approaches have been created:
· Architect – analysis of industry shifts
· Mobilizer – build capabilities for action
· Visionary –identify new products, services, and business models
· Surveyor – shape the public debate
· Fund Manager – reallocate corporate portfolio
