A man celebrating his 100th birthday was approached by a news reporter. “I suppose you’ve seen a lot of changes in your day?”
“Yes,” the centenarian said, “and I’ve been against every one of them.”
Because employees are naturally change resistant, one company says, “We’re not changing…we’re just constantly improving!”
The British created a civil service job in 1803 calling for a man to stand on the Cliffs of Dover. He was supposed to ring a bell if he saw Napoleon coming. The job was abolished in 1945 (Source: Robert Townsent, Up the Organization).
Change is episodic interruption of the status quo.
Like it or not, though, one thing that will never change is constant change. We are told that the oldest piece of papyrus that has ever been translated is a sentence that says, “Things are not what they used to be.” (2,000 B.C.)
