State governments are struggling with serious budget deficits with almost all areas being cut. However, some areas (i.e. education) have louder voices than others (i.e. prisoner integration back into society).

Last year, when Parade magazine asked Americans what type of organization they would donate to, they responded in this order: food & shelter for the needy, research to cure a disease, disaster relief, animal welfare, youth programs, poverty relief/job assistance, education, my religion’s charity, global environment, public health, human rights, my immediate environment, literacy, other religious charities, promoting world democracy, visual and performing arts.

I think that this ranking will help give a perspective on the issues that people care about. This care may translate into the issues that they will more likely protest budget cuts, as well as possibly donating to address these areas’ budget gaps.

To what cause(s) do you donate?
