I was delivering a leadership development program for a medical device company recently. The CEO came in to provide some of his key leadership insights:
- Leaders don’t have the full information to make decisions…this is not unusual; it is every day.
- There are no easy answers; otherwise, a problem would have been solved instead of escalated to the leader.
- Leaders use the resources around them to help solve issues – yet those escalating need to create/recommend ideas for solutions, not just raise the problem.
- Don’t drive the bus looking in the rearview mirror.
- Identify what motivates your decision making.
Another CEO, GE’s Jeff Immelt, stepped down in 2017 and shared some key leadership lessons:
- Become more humble
- Be a better risk manager, better learner, better questioner
- Keep your sense of optimism
- Become more reflective on everything that happens
- In today’s world, you control fewer things, so need to be more resilient
What are your leadership lessons?
