Professional Development

I was delivering a leadership development program for a medical device company recently. The CEO came in to provide some of his key leadership insights:

  • Leaders don’t have the full information to make decisions…this is not unusual; it is every day.
  • There are no easy answers; otherwise, a problem would have been solved instead of escalated to the leader.
  • Leaders use the resources around them to help solve issues – yet those escalating need to create/recommend ideas for solutions, not just raise the problem.
  • Don’t drive the bus looking in the rearview mirror.
  • Identify what motivates your decision making.

Another CEO, GE’s Jeff Immelt, stepped down in 2017 and shared some key leadership lessons:

  • Become more humble
  • Be a better risk manager, better learner, better questioner
  • Keep your sense of optimism
  • Become more reflective on everything that happens
  • In today’s world, you control fewer things, so need to be more resilient

What are your leadership lessons?
