Some think that 20% of an organization is ready for change, 60% can be swayed and trained, and yet there will always be 20% that resist. I believe this is an optimistic outlook, as social scientists and behavioral economists find that humans are biased toward the status quo. They say that humans resist changing assumptions and approaches, even in the face of evidence! To overcome this resistance, an employee must fully understand the change opportunity in order to adopt and own.
To accomplish this, a change leader engages in a constituent discussion to:
· Gather information,
· Understand individual bias that gives lens to viewing situation,
o Incumbents struggle to interpret the future
· Empower followers as well as have “open-door.”
How do you overcome change resisters?
